History of Sigiriya

The history of Sigiriya goes back to the times of monks, kings, wars, triumphs, and defeats. Centuries ago, the lion rock used to be a monastery, but unexpectedly a war broke out between two brothers called Kashyapa and Mugallanna who fought for the throne to become the next king.  King Kashyapa who unrightfully overthrew his brother for the throne, decided to seek shelter in a lion-shaped rock. Later on his brother Mugallanna discovered the rock and destroyed most of it, while King Kashyapa died at war.
